Dental OPG & CBCT

Orthopantomography (OPG)

OPG X-Ray
TMJ – Open and Closed
Lateral Cephalogram

Orthopantomography, is a type of X-ray scan that gives a panoramic or wide view of the lower face. It can display all the teeth on both jaws on one film, including those that have not surfaced or erupted yet, such as wisdom tooth / tooth not yet erupted in children.

It also offers a view of the jawbone and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which connects the jaw to the rest of the skull.

This is today considered a basic evaluation before any dental treatment as it gives and idea of all the teeth, jaw, bone density and also asymptomatic pathologies giving a holistic approach before proper treatment planning

What is a CBCT scan?

  • CBCT (Cone-Beam Computed Tomography) scan is a type of medical imaging technique that produces precise 3D images of the bones and soft tissues in the maxillofacial region. This technique uses a cone-shaped beam of x-rays to capture a wider field of view (FOV). The images obtained from CBCT have high resolution and are very accurate.
  • CBCT scans are used for the imaging of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures. CBCT captures a series of cross-sectional images of a specific area of the mouth.
  •  CBCT can be used to view individual teeth or the roots of the teeth. It is used for diagnosing jaw lesions (cysts & tumors) with their extent.
It is highly recommended for implant planning, to assess the quality of the bone in the jaw, accurate measurements  and for making guides for dental implants.

FAQ

The procedure consists of the patient resting their chin on a small shelf in front of the X-ray machine and biting softly on a sterile mouthpiece to keep the head and mouth steady while the images are taken.

The panoramic X-ray machine consists of a rotating arm with the X-ray source at one end and the film mechanism (which captures the image) at the opposite extremity. The arm rotates around the patient’s head to capture the wide view of their mouth and jaw.

The procedure is performed very quickly.

No, removal of metallic jewellery in the neck , ear , nose is recommended as these may cause artifacts on the radiograph

  •  It is done bothways and depends upon the clinicians requirement
  • It is always a better idea to get it written on the requisition form by the clinical dentist

OPG and related X-Rays take 10 mins and you would be out with your film in 20 mins.

CBCT needs 20 mins for the test and then some time for the doctor to evaluate the images and customize or any tailoring of additional sections.

However, in peak hours you may have to wait longer depending upon patient load.

No, the patient feels no discomfort during the procedure and can continue with their daily routine afterwards.

If absolutely necessary, it can be done by using lead abdominal shields.

However, in this scenario  written request from your treating dentist and your written consent would be required.
